Toughened Glass vs Laminated Glass – Whats the difference?

Today I thought I’d write about the difference in Glass Types. If you’re confused about Toughened Glass vs Laminated Glass this post should clear it up for you!

So Toughened Glass is used for Glass Splashbacks, Door Panels and Showerscreens and, Laminated Glass is used for windows, door panels and Shopfronts.

Toughened glass has been processed by controlled thermal or chemical treatments  which increases its strength when  compared with normal glass. It  is made by processes which create balanced internal stresses- this gives the glass strength. Toughened Glass shatters into small fragments instead of sharp shards when broken – so severe injuries and deeplacerations are lessened when it breaks.

Laminated Glass is a type of safety glass that holds together when shattered. If it breaks it is held in place by an interlayer typically of polyvinyl butyral (PVB), between its two or more layers of glass. The interlayer keeps the layers of glass bonded even when broken, and its high strength prevents the glass from breaking up into large sharp pieces. This produces a characteristic “spider web” cracking pattern when the impact is not enough to completely pierce the glass.  It wont shatter or breal into pieces like Toughened glass will.
